The Gift Card Conundrum: Digital convenience or something you can actually hold?

Almost everything is becoming digital.

We tap to pay. We shop online. Tickets live on our phones. So surely the physical gift card should be disappearing too?

And yet, there’s something digital still struggles to replicate: tangibility.

Sending someone a digital code is convenient. Handing them a physical gift card feels like giving them something.

It can be wrapped. Put inside a birthday card. Placed under a Christmas tree. Displayed at the point of sale. And, importantly for retailers, the physical card becomes another opportunity to put their brand directly into the customer’s hands.

That’s the gift card conundrum.

Digital delivers speed and convenience, but physical delivers presence, experience and perceived value.

And today’s physical cards don’t have to exist separately from the digital world. QR codes, online activation, digital accounts and other technologies can connect a tangible product with a much wider digital experience.

At Oasys Technologies, we’ve spent decades developing machinery and automation for card production – helping manufacturers deliver the quality, consistency and efficiency demanded by modern card programmes.

The world may be going digital, but sometimes there’s still no substitute for putting something real in someone’s hand.

Digital is convenient. Physical feels like a gift.
