In the 21st century The rise of high security machine readable – ePassports has let to demand for manufacturing processes and systems to create the smart “Datapages” within these Passports.
The Datapages contain all the usual personal holder details – secured with various covert security features, plus a Chip containing encrypted data which is machine readable through a buried antenna.
Together with security print, holograms. Window features and buried, personalised laser data the Datapage is typically constructed with up to 10 layers
Generally made from high durability Polycarbonate each of these functional elements must be individually produced, assembled and welded into a solid laminated Polycarbonate Page – around the thickness of a credit card – this DataPage is then bound into the traditional Passport together with the paper pages and cover that we are all familiar with.
The switch back to the “blue” British Passport following Brexit required the reissuing of a large number of Passports and the facility of the automated eGates at Airports, giving people a typically faster processing time through immigration has encouraged takeup pf the new style passports.
As in the UK many other countries have introduced the new style of Passport – providing enhanced security and swifter immigration clearance

PASSPORT DATAPAGE CONSTRUCTION
The passport datapage is the most security-critical component of a modern passport, containing the holder’s personal information, photograph, and the embedded electronic chip used by automated border control systems. Constructed from multiple layers of advanced materials and security features, the data page is designed to protect against frau d, identity theft, and counterfeiting.
Manufacturing a passport datapage involves a series of highly controlled processes, including layer collation, chip integration, hinge insertion, lamination, and precision cutting before final booklet assembly.

TECHNOLOGY
Certain engineered elastomers are able to remove particles from a surface by an intimate rolling contact – this can clean surfaces and create effectively defect free products for onward assembly and manufacture – essentially increasing yields in production.
The technology of the elastomer roller can pick up particles below one micron and remove over 98% of dust, particles and fibre on a given surface.
Static can be an issue particularly on electronic and printed flat surfaces where dust and contamination attracts contamination due to electrically charged surfaces. The technology of the roller has built in anti static properties to control and mitigate static – allowing the contamination to be removed and reducing static charge in the product.
The technology is completed by a dirt “collection” system that cleans the elastomer roller – ensuring that particles to not get retransferred to the product surface.

ODG500 Fully Automatic ID/Passport Datapage Cutting System
The double cutting / guillotine system from Oasys was developed 30 years ago to create accurate “datum” edges on laminated credit card sheets – enabling accurate subsequent processes such as screen printing printing on the cards
In later years the machine has developed to cut Passport Datapages and other ID documents – creating for example “binding ready” Passport Datapages
The system uses a comibination of precision transport and three axis registration to accurately cut sheets of Cards / Datapages into predetermined formats or sizes.
